Altocumulus castellanus (Ac cas)

This species of Altocumulus describes the crenellated Ac, which is known primarily from the warmer months as a typical harbinger of showers and thunderstorms.

Altocumulus cumulonimbogenitus).

Altocumulus castellanus (Ac cas) develops through the convective lifting of air at middle levels. As a rule, Ac cas usually forms directly as a distinct cloud type. However, it can also develop from existing Altocumulus clouds (particularly from Altocumulus floccus and Altocumulus stratiformis). Less commonly, however, Ac cas forms by transformation of other cloud genera. Occasionally, it remains as a remnant when cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds dissipate (see, for example, Altocumulus cumulonimbogenitus).

When Altocumulus castellanus clouds appear in the sky, this is what they look like in their classic form:

A characteristic feature is the common horizontal base of clouds from which tooth- or crenellated-shaped, cumuliform turrets and protrusions are rising vertically.

Relationship Between Altocumulus castellanus and Altocumulus floccus

In many cases, however, the common horizontal cloud base is not fully developed, but interrupted or, at times, only faintly visible. This can be seen in the following images. This makes the close relationship with Ac floccus particularly striking:

Here you can see transitional forms between Ac floccus and Ac castellanus. Where there is a common cloud base, there is Altocumulus castellanus. Where the common cloud base is not developed, however, there is Altocumulus floccus.

Altocumulus castellanus und Entwicklung von Gewittern /

Altocumulus castellanus and Development of Thunderstorms

Altocumulus castellanus is not only an important indicator of approaching thunderstorms. In some cases, a fully developed Ac cas itself can develop into a thunderstorm cell. It sometimes forms massive, horizontal cloud banks from which individual parts of the cloud rise vertically:

Massiver Ac castellanus / Massive Ac castellanus
Massiver Ac castellanus / Massive Ac castellanus

Under ideal conditions, these towering clouds can develop into large shower and thunderstorm clouds (“elevated convection”), resulting thus in a transformation from Altocumulus castellanus to Cumulus altocumulogenitus or Cumulonimbus altocumulogenitus. The following image shows such a transformation into a Cb with a high cloud base; its origin from an Altocumulus castellanus (in the right side of the image) is clearly recognizable. Thunderstorms that develop from such Ac clouds can sometimes be very strong and cause severe weather.

Altocumulus castellanus undulatus

When Ac castellanus is becoming more frequent, it can often be observed that individual cloud banks merge to form entire layers. It is striking that lenticular-like cloudforms often predominate in this process, as can be seen in the next image. As the individual cloud banks merge, they often initially form a wave-like basic structure (see also Altocumulus undulatus); thus, this is Altocumulus castellanus undulatus (see also below):

Ac castellanus undulatus (mit Lenticularis-Formen / with lenticular-cloudforms)
Ac castellanus undulatus (mit Lenticularis-Formen / with lenticular-cloudforms)

However, even isolated banks of Ac castellanus sometimes produce wave-like patterns and should therefore be classified as Altocumulus castellanus undulatus:

Altocumulus castellanus undulatus may also occur simultaneously with Ac floccus (or other Ac species) in this context:

Ac castellanus undulatus (rechts) und Ac floccus / Ac castellanus undulatus (to the right) and Ac floccus
Ac castellanus undulatus (rechts) und Ac floccus / Ac castellanus undulatus (to the right) and Ac floccus

Altocumulus castellanus radiatus

If there are several Ac castellanus banks, and if they are more widely separated from one another than in the case of Undulatus and do not form a common wave system, then they are classified as Altocumulus castellanus radiatus (see also Altocumulus radiatus):

At times, Ac cas ra stretches across large portions of the sky:

Ac castellanus radiatus in der Abenddämmerung / Ac castellanus radiatus at dusk
Ac castellanus radiatus in der Abenddämmerung / Ac castellanus radiatus at dusk

Altocumulus castellanus duplicatus

Occasionally, Ac castellanus can also appear in the variety “Duplicatus” (see also Altocumulus duplicatus). In this case, the Castellanus banks appear in two or more layers, as shown in the following close-up image of an Altocumulus castellanus duplicatus (Ac castellanus undulatus radiatus duplicatus):

The next image also shows an Altocumulus castellanus duplicatus:

Altocumulus castellanus duplicatus

Other varieties, such as Lacunosus, or supplementary features and accessory clouds occur only very rarely in Ac cas. Pileus may, in fact, develop above the summits of particularly prominent spires and turrets under certain conditions (although the cloud classification does not provide for this in Ac cas). Mamma rarely can be seen in Ac cas due to the rising air motion within the cloud, but virga does occur (see also Altocumulus virga).

Altocumulus castellanus virga

The following image shows distinct trails of ice crystals under an Ac castellanus:

By the way: When the virga phenomenon is particularly pronounced, the individual trails of ice crystals below the Ac can, in some cases, coalesce into a new layer of clouds. This layer is then classified as an Altostratus. It is not uncommon for the original Altocumulus clouds (here: Ac cas) to dissipate later in the process.

Sometimes, however, the trails are only faintly visible. For example, in the following image, taken just before a thunderstorm develops (transition from Ac cas to Cb altocumulogenitus, “elevated convection”), virga is barely visible along the first row of Ac cas at the top center of the image:

Im Vorfeld von Asperitas: Altocumulus castellanus unter Altostratus / Ahead of the development of Asperitas: Ac castellanus below Altostratus
Im Vorfeld von Asperitas: Altocumulus castellanus unter Altostratus / Ahead of the development of Asperitas: Ac castellanus below Altostratus
